Joan, I shall always treasure my precious memories of you. As children Gill and I had some great adventures coming down to Devon on the train to see you, Alan and Granny. It was always a pleasure to spend time with you, and both Jan and I always looked forward to every opportunity we had to pay you a visit. In later years I had many enjoyable conversations on the phone with you - sometimes just recounting recent events in our respecive lives, but also discussing current affairs and setting the world to rights! I especially remember one call, many years ago now, when you talked about having taken your group of "old ladies" to and from the morning service, only to realise afterwards that you were considerably older than all of them! I also know you were a great support and dear friend to my Mum and Dad over the years. That sums you up Joan, always helping others in whatever way you could. We'll miss you Joan, but are greatly comforted by the knowledge that you're now with Jesus, free of all pain and restriction, and we look forward to meeting up once again whenever our time in this life is done.

Joan you are a much loved Aunt & were a living link to my beloved Father (your Brother) Frank. Joan, you & Granny Violet were my models of pure kindness; I can only aspire to your example. I saw how you cared for your Mum, Allan & your dear Brothers. As an Aunt you were always welcoming, always kind, warm & generous & forever patient with us, your Nieces & Nephews. My childhood memories of time spent with you, listening to our family stories, is very dear to me. As an adult I missed being able to see you, talk with you & hug you in person, but we kept a close connection through our shared correspondence. We wrote regularly to each other, hundreds of cards over the years, always beautiful cards, carefully chosen & written; I cherished each and every one. I was looking forward to choosing your flower bouquet to celebrate your 102nd Birthday next month, but instead I shall celebrate your life in the way you have said is important to you. We're going to miss Auntie Joan a lot. Just shy of 102 years old is an incredible milestone and throughout those years she shared her grace and kindness with a lot of people. Her life is a testament to her strength, and she leaves behind many cherished memories. She will always have a place in our hearts. We did not get to see her as often as we would have liked, but we always looked forward to driving down to see her on our visits to the UK. We always left with something -- family history we didn't know, old photos, stories and more. Ever the hostess, she always insisted on making lunch, no matter how often we tried to convince her that we should handle that, and she should be taking things easy! We did manage to talk her into going to the local pub once -- and we have a photo of her there that will always make us smile.

I am I and you are you, whatever we were to each other that we still are. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was.
